So you need higher Nautical,
but you hate ship-to-ship combat?
Here are a few ways to keep your Nautical Level up so that you can do the bare minimum of ship sinking combat:
1. Companions: Send them Sailin' to get you Nautical XP. You can start as low as level 8. Train them in the Cannoneer talent, so that they return with 10% more XP. Train your Musketeers with higher ranks of Cannoneer so that they can do even better! Cannoneer Rank 2 returns 15% and Cannoneer Rank 3 gives 25% more experience than a companion without the talent. Keep them level-trained as well, so that they remain efficient.

3. Piggy-backing: Don't ignore other pirates who are sinking ships. As you are traveling the windlanes, throw out an attack or two and you'll earn XP when the ship is sunk. The higher the world you can do this in, the better, as nautical xp is based primarily on the difference in your level versus the enemy's level. The bonus here is that you can also win Scrip.
Another way to piggy-back is to crew someone else's ship when they are fighting. You don't get as much as the Captain, but you still get some, and if you can work on the tokens, you can save them some recovery time.
4. Join a Wolf-Pack: This is a lot like piggy-backing, but goes a lot faster, because you've found a group of pirates farming a wandering boss ship or Turret in the skyway. Once again, just a hit or two gets you experience, and you can sit the rest of the battle out in the windlane until they start the next ship. Again, bonus chance for Scrip if you participate.
Those are the main ways to keep your pirate's Nautical Level on a par with your character level.
